Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603 on the wild lands of Ezo (Hokkaido), around Mount Yōtei, and follows Atsu, a new "Ghost" in an age of rōnin and untamed nature. If you want to recreate her look or the game's aesthetic for a cosplay or a display, here's the history that matters and the handmade masks that fit best. The game launched on October 2, 2025 on PS5, and its rōnin mood is exactly the kind of aesthetic I work on in the studio.
Key takeaways
- Setting: Ezo (Hokkaido) in 1603, the dawn of the Edo period, far from the capital
- Atsu travels with a wolf, tying the game to Ainu kamuy and the protective Ōkami
- For cosplay: the Mempo (samurai half-mask) and the Ōkami wolf mask are the closest pieces

The setting: Ezo and Mount Yōtei in 1603
Where Ghost of Tsushima faced a Mongol invasion, Ghost of Yōtei takes place more than three centuries later, in 1603, the hinge year that opens the Edo period and the Tokugawa shogunate. But the story unfolds far from the capital, on Ezo (today's Hokkaido), a region not yet fully under Japanese control. A land of frontiers, vast plains and sacred mountains, crowned by Mount Yōtei, the "Fuji of Ezo". That mystical mood, where nature rules, echoes the mountain-spirit legends behind my Tengu mask.
Atsu and the wolf: the Ōkami angle
Here we follow Atsu, traveling with a wolf. That detail ties the game to the wilderness and to the kamuy, the spirits of the island's Ainu culture. The wolf (Ōkami) is a powerful, protective figure in Japanese folklore, often a messenger of the gods, a symbol of loyalty and ferocity. If that resonates, the texture work on my wolf-inspired masks is a direct homage to the creature.
The rōnin's gear: the Mempo
By 1603, not all samurai are gleaming armored retainers. Many become rōnin, masterless samurai wandering the roads, their gear more practical and travel-worn. But the Mempo half-mask stays central, protecting the face and unsettling the enemy. In Ghost of Yōtei, the mask designs blend protection and intimidation, far from shop-bought industrial plastic. That raw, historical authenticity is what I chase with my PETG prints, hand-sanded to give them a soul. For a wandering-warrior look, in cosplay or on a shelf, the samurai Mempo is the strongest base.

Which Dai Yokai masks fit the game?
- The samurai Mempo: closest to Atsu's rōnin look, protection and intimidation.
- The Ōkami wolf mask: for the animal side and the Ainu kamuy, Atsu's wolf companion.
- The Tengu: for the spirit of the sacred mountains, in line with Mount Yōtei.
- The Oni: for a more demonic presence, if you're after the "Ghost" aura that terrifies enemies.
The whole range comes from my workshop in Brittany: PETG printed, sanded, hand-painted, shipped tracked. It's all on the handmade masks page, and the Mempo collection for the half-masks.

FAQ
Is Ghost of Yotei a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?
It's a spiritual sequel, not a direct one: set more than 300 years later, in a different region (Hokkaido), with a new protagonist, Atsu, and no plot link to Jin Sakai.
When did Ghost of Yotei release?
The game launched on October 2, 2025 on PS5, developed by Sucker Punch.
Which mask works for an Atsu or Ghost of Yotei cosplay?
The samurai Mempo for the rōnin look, the Ōkami mask for the wolf companion, the Tengu for the mountain spirit. Wearable half-masks made for cosplay and display alike.
Are there traditional Japanese masks in the game?
Yes. The 1603 setting is rich in Mempo (samurai masks) and folklore, the aesthetic I reproduce at Dai Yokai.
Where is Ghost of Yotei set?
On the island of Ezo, today's Hokkaido, around Mount Yōtei (the "Fuji of Ezo"), in 1603, at the very start of the Edo period.
